* Sees FY10 EPS $2.00 to $2.30

* Q3 loss $0.15/shr vs $0.98/shr a year ago

* Revenue down 6 pct to $398.8 mln

April 1 (Reuters) - Children's books publisher Scholastic Corp (SCHL.O) posted a narrower third-quarter loss, helped by federal stimulus funding that favored sales of educational technology, and raised the lower end of its fiscal 2010 profit-outlook range.

For fiscal 2010, the company expects earnings of $2.00 to $2.30 a share, from continuing operations and before items, compared with $1.80 to $2.30 per share forecast earlier.

Analysts expect earnings of $2.40 per share.

For the third quarter ended Feb. 28, net loss was $5.6 million, or 15 cents per share, compared with a loss of $36 million, or 98 cents per share, a year ago.

Revenue fell about 6 percent to $398.8 million, mainly reflecting strong Harry Potter-related sales in the prior year, Scholastic said.

Two analysts expected a loss of 12 cents per share on revenue of $425 million for the quarter, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

Increased federal stimulus funding drove more than 30 percent growth in sales of educational technology in the quarter, Chief Executive Richard Robinson said in a statement.

Shares of the company closed at $28 Wednesday on Nasdaq. (Reporting by Vinay Sarawagi in Bangalore; Editing by Vinu Pilakkott)

Posted: 01 Apr 2010 06:26 AM PDT

(RTTNews) -  Children's books publisher Scholastic Corporation (SCHL: News ) Thursday posted a narrower loss for the third quarter, reflecting lower non-cash losses and the absence of last year's one-time severance charge. However, revenues for the period dropped year on year due to a decline in trade sales. Further, the company revised its earnings per share view for fiscal 2010.

Third-quarter net loss narrowed to $5.6 million or $0.15 per share from $36.0 million or $0.98 per share in the year-ago period. Loss from continuing operations lowered to $4.6 million or $0.12 per share from a loss of $34.5 million or $0.93 per share in the comparable period last year.

During the quarter the company recorded a loss on investment of $1.5 million compared to $13.5 million in the year-ago period. The company noted that last year's results included a $5.8 million one-time severance as well as an impairment charge of $17.0 million.

Excluding one-time, mostly non-cash expenses of $0.08 per share and $0.83 per share respectively, loss per share from continuing operations was $0.04 compared to $0.10 in the current and prior year periods.

New York-based Scholastic's revenues for the quarter declined to $398.8 million from $423.6 million in the same quarter a year ago.

By segments, revenues from educational publishing rose to $88.0 million from $74.7 million in the prior-year quarter. International revenues were $88.7 million, up from $87.3 million in the year-ago period, primarily reflecting a positive foreign exchange impact of $11.5 million.

Revenues from children's book publishing and distribution dropped to $192.1 million from $228.7 million in the same period last year, reflecting a $22.2 million decline in trade sales. Media, licensing and advertising segment revenues declined to $30.0 million from $32.9 million in the year-ago period.

Corporate overhead in the quarter was $14.3 million compared to $23.5 million in the same quarter last year, primarily reflecting reductions in salary and overhead expenses as a result, selling, general and administrative expenses for the period reduced to $189.8 million from $197.5 million in the year-ago quarter.

For the first nine months of fiscal 2010, the company posted a net profit of $26.9 million or $0.73 per share compared to a loss of $42.0 million or $1.12 per share in the comparable period last year.

Earnings from continuing operations was $27.6 million compared to a loss of $18.9 million a year ago.
